About

Once Upon A Time…as all the greatest literature begins…..Once upon a time, before twitter, before Facebook, before Google, before computers…Yes, we’re talking about a life and time long, long ago, and far, far away. Yes, in these olden times people ate food that they or their neighbors or communities grew or raised. Markets were local and small. Produce was available seasonally, and if out of season, was either  incredibly expensive or potentially even unattainable.

And we were all healthier. Coincidence? I don’t think so…..Correlation? Oh, yes!…..Cause? We don’t yet know.

Children learned about food and cooking from their elders : their mothers, grandmothers, maybe older siblings – as they worked together in the kitchen or the garden, or at the local market. Today, multi-generation cooking together on a daily basis is not a common occurrence.

So, welcome to my kitchen! I like food & cooking that’s usually simple & fun, that’s sometimes a little more complicated but still doable, and that’s always delicious! I’ll share what I know – which is what I have learned from my grandmother, from friends & mentors, from the classes in cooking, biochemistry & nutrition I have taken, from experience cooking in a commercial kitchen, and from reading and listening to others who like food and gardens and sustainable agriculture, too.

Good food. Local food. Slow Food. Farmer’s Markets.  Community Supported Agriculture. A passion for good food can mean the simplest preparation or elaborate procedures. I want to share my food passions. I’ll tell you about favorite recipes and cookbooks, and hope you will share yours, too, along with your story about the recipe – where you found it, or why you like it. Whatever special story that goes with it. Good food and good stories with friends – what could be better??

I started this blog for a class project on using technology in higher ed – I was working on a doctorate in Higher & Adult Education (which in now completed!). I wrote a lot about vegetables at first, because I  had signed up for my first CSA (community supported agriculture) share, which was the inspiration for this blog – I have spent a lot of my career teaching folks about foods and cooking. I’ll move on to other foods in time. But when the local farmer’s markets are open – there will be a lot about vegetables, fruits and flowers – I am there!!

And oh, yes – All the photos are all mine. The recipes are mine, unless noted otherwise. And of course, the words are mine. Copyright photos, my recipes & words 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015….
